During the halftime of the first home football game some Belleville High School students and their parents are honored by presenting special academic awards that were earned during the previous school year. Read the following description for each award. Academic Letter Winner The criteria for the academic letter is a yearly grade point average of 3.70 and a minimum number of units of credit in the "new basics" (math, science, social science, English, foreign languages, and computers). Less than 10% of the students per year meet the criteria for this letter. Perfect Attendance Award BHS students with perfect attendance from the previous year receives a certificate signed by the principal. Employers and businesses frequently tell us this is one of the most important things they look for when hiring employees. Job applications forms from major companies along with many scholarship applications ask for attendance records from schools. It is difficult to instruct students with frequent absenteeism. Excellence on State Assessment Exams Every year State Assessment Exams are required by the State Department of Education. Quality Performance Accreditation, better known as Q.P.A. requires that schools conduct and show improvement in the areas of reading, math, and writing to maintain their accreditation by the State of Kansas. Only certain subject areas (Math, Reading, Writing, Science, and Social Studies) are tested, but they are on a schedule determined by the State Department on which year they will be given. For example: Juniors take the reading test every year and the Sophomores take the math test every year. Every other year Sophomores take the science exam. Juniors every other year take the social studies. But these testing schedules are subject to change from the State Department of Education. Students receiving these awards compete against a standard of excellence set by the State of Kansas in these basic areas of education. |
