Ten Republic County High School freshmen and sophomores traveled to Hays on
Thursday, November 12 to compete in the FHSU Math Relays. The students
participated in 5 of 6 mathematical tests. The 6th test of
Trigonometry was only open to Junior and Senior contestants. The freshman team of Kelby Johnson, Devin Nutsch and Lucas Nutsch placed 1st in "Calculations with Calculators". The freshman team of Dustion Jeardoe, Kelby Johnson, and Devin Nutsch placed 4th in "Informal Geometry and Measurements". The freshman team of Jaden Baxa, Dustin Jeardoe, and Devin Nutsch placed 5th in "Applications of Algebra.". The freshman team of Jaden Baxa, Kelby Johnson, and Devin Nutsch placed 9th in "Algebraic Manipulations". Sophomore Blake Poter had and individual 6th place in "Applications of Algebra". The sophomore team of Callie Brzon, Blake Porter, and Jaclyn Sheets placed 7th in "Calculations with Calculators". The sophomore team of Callie Brzon, Stetson Junek, and Colten Tuma placed 9th in "Applications of Algebra". Points are awarded to a school for placing in the top 6 finishers. This gave Republic County with 15 points an overall 8th team finish for 2A/3A schools. There were a total of 48 schools and 572 individuals from across Kansas entered in these events. Competitors from Republic County Schools were: Freshmen: Jaden Baxa, Dustin Jeardoe, Kelby Johnson, Devin Nutsch, and Lucas Nutsch Sophomores: Callie Brzon, Stetson Junek, Blake Porter, Jaclyn Sheets, and Colten Tuma The following is a description of the six events: |
Event 1--Using Number Sense (no
calculator) Alternate names for numbers, number patterns, place value, order relations among numbers, estimation, elementary probability and statistics, and reasonableness of results. |
Event 2--Trigonometry Recognize and use trigonometric identities. Solve triangles, including use of laws of sines and cosines. Solve equations involving trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions. Use radian and degree measure. Use vectors and complex numbers and polar form for complex numbers. |
Event 3--Algebraic Manipulations
(no calculator) Add, subtract, multiply, and divide polynomials and rational fractions. Factor polynomials, find least common denominator of polynomial fractions. Simplify complex fractions. Solution of equations and inequalities reducible to linear and quadratic equations and inequalities. May include radicals and exponentials. Solution of systems of equations and inequalities with two unknowns. |
Event 4--Informal Geometry,
Measurement Computing perimeters, areas, volumes of given geometric figures. Using properties of geometric figures and similar and congruence relations. Central and inscribed angles in circles. Ratios and proportions. Metric conversions. |
Event 5--Applications of Algebra,
Arithmetic (word problems) Word problems. The emphasis here will be on interpreting and solving problems presented in words rather than symbols. The problems may involve arithmetic only or the use of equations. Stress is on everyday applications. |
Event 6--Calculations with
Calculators Students must have a scientific calculator with functions that include probability, trigonometry, and logarithms, as well as algebraic functions, such as roots and radicals. All answers will be in decimal format or scientific notation. |
